It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags…

In the course of re-entry into our new kitchen space over the last couple of weeks, a lot of things didn’t happen. I tried to set up the storage space so that the things we would want first would be at the front. But when we started the construction process, I had no idea it would go to within a week of Christmas! It took some finagling, but I found the Christmas stockings (on the 23rd!) and the Christmas tablecloths. Lots of things I’ve “always” had up for Christmas didn’t happen. And it was all OK.

One of the funniest problems came when I could not find the rest of the Christmas wrapping stuff – the package ties, the ribbons, etc. I did find a few rolls of wrapping paper, and the rest we used leftover newsprint and markers. It was fun, creative and hilarious. And it really didn’t matter.

Christmas came, just the same. We sang carols, listened to favorite music as the cookies baked (finally!!!) in our new oven, and I found a jar of mincemeat for Bearded Brewer’s Christmas pie. Even though Christmas is today, we will continue to enjoy Christmastime together. The “things” of Christmas were set aside for time with the people I love. And that’s pretty wonderful.

Early on in the move-in process, I realized that I had to make a choice. The “stuff” that didn’t matter stayed in boxes. Gradually, as we moved things back in, I have started to sort and give away (a LOT of STUFF!!!), but I have not really stressed over what didn’t happen.

The girls did most of the holiday baking and decorating. It was fun to watch them enjoy the unveiling of Christmas, to share in the memories and message of why we celebrate. The little wooden German “town” and creches were placed. The stories of our family “traditions” were explained. And it is all a joy to watch unfold.

So whatever didn’t get baked (or got baked and devoured too quickly) we will make do, or, do more of the same this next week and continue to remember “God with us” as another Advent unfolds into Christmas!

  1. much like my Christmas, no presents and therefore no need for paper and bows, but lots of baking and good cheer and family.

Blessings for you and your family, Merry Christmas.
