Your days are numbered…

You know, some times, you just have to count your blessings. Being in the right place at the right time probably saved some lives today.

My poor friends stuck on I-270  during rush hour were there because there was a bus accident. Some of the injured came to our hospital, and I was on duty as the on-call chaplain. It looks like they are going to be fine. But what struck me as I talked with them was their overwhelming sense of God’s grace — that it could have been SO MUCH WORSE than it was. And that life is far too precious and shorter than we can imagine.

This accident came during my on call hours on the heels of two ER codes of adults who died from sudden myocardial infarctions. They were both younger than me! I gotta tell you, I considered tonight what I wanted for dinner. I had to stay late at the hospital for on call hours so I passed up that cheeseburger and had a salad!

My days are numbered… God knows the full extent of them. Accidents and health shockers may come. But for as long as I’ve got, I’ll rest and trust in God — who has my back.

5 You sweep us away in the sleep of death;
we are like the new grass of the morning-
6 though in the morning it springs up new,
by evening it is dry and withered.
12 Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90
