Tonight in using Lectio Divina to reflect on Psalm 33 and God’s power, I was struck by the vastness of Creation and how it reflects this immeasurable attribute of God.
6By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of God’s mouth all their host.
7God gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; and puts the deeps in storehouses.
8Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe!
9For God spoke, and it came to be; commanded, and it stood firm.
I’m NOT getting into the Creation/Evolution debate (the raving fanatics of both sides tend to ignore some inconsistencies in their arguments. Frankly, I don’t care. We’re here now. Let’s take care of what we’ve inherited!)
I don’t need to know how stars come into being, I just understand that it’s a huge process, almost incomprehensible and not something that can be explained in pure mathematical terms. When people start giving me numbers and their theories, my brain shuts down. I’m kinda like these guys:
Explain it how you wish. The perspective I am taking is that in all of its beauty, majesty and breadth, as part of the created, I worship the Creator.
The word picture that came to my mind was the night sky in Colorado this summer. Early one morning (or late one night) I was wide awake and couldn’t get back to sleep. The clerestory windows of the house looked out onto the wilderness of the Rockies. The moon had set. And the skies over my head were filled with layers and layers of stars. It was stunning.
Name them all. Explain them all. It’s still a huge task.
Kinda God-sized. And that’s where I’ll park and look up.
